A polyglot is a person who is multilingual. English might be his first language but he has also learned a second language, a third and so on.

A polyglot can communicate fluently and proficiently in different languages aside from his native tongue. Not only that, he can also speak and understand many languages and can also write them well.

Another quality of an English polyglot is that he can both listen and read the languages of other nations. He may know 2 or more other tongues aside from his native tongue.

The first language that he has to learn is his mother tongue. Aside from that, he is usually trained in some other languages, particularly English, Spanish, French and Italian. However, other languages can also be learnt.

A child with bilingual parents is usually raised up as a polyglot. Parents typically communicate with the child since birth with two languages – the mother tongue and another tongue. As the child grows, they can start to teach him with one more foreign language.

The best way is to learn multilingualism from childhood. If this fails or if a person did not have the chance to learn multilingualism as a child, there are still other ways to achieve it.

Nowadays, various materials are being sold in the market which can provide learning and training for English people who would like to become a polyglot. There are special books, CDs and other materials a person who is aiming to become a polyglot can purchase.

Aside from securing copies of such materials, some special schools offer services for learning second and third languages.
